Acquired brain injury (ABI) is not hereditary, congenital, degenerative, or induced by birth trauma. ABI occurs after birth.
The two types of ABI are traumatic and non-traumatic.
Causes of ABI
- Trauma
- Stroke
- Anoxia – absence of oxygen in the brain
- Infections – of the brain (encephalitis) or its membranes (meningitis)
- Tumors
- Surgery
