Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)

Acquired brain injury (ABI) is not hereditary, congenital, degenerative, or induced by birth trauma. ABI occurs after birth.

The two types of ABI are traumatic and non-traumatic.

Causes of ABI

  • Trauma
  • Stroke
  • Anoxia – absence of oxygen in the brain
  • Infections – of the brain (encephalitis) or its membranes (meningitis)
  • Tumors
  • Surgery
