CVA Prevalence and Impact

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States. The incidence is almost 800,000 annually with over 600,000 first-time strokes and a 185,000 case recurrence. Stroke accounts for almost 3% of the population from 2007-2010. In one study (n=220), 26% were dependent for ADLs six months post-CVA, half had reduced mobility or hemiparesis, 19% had aphasia, 35% had depression, and 26% required nursing home placement.

Stroke remains one of the top leading causes of mortality in the US as well as in developed nations with over 150,000 deaths each year and 300,000 stroke survivors having significant disability. Stroke is an economic burden that is impacted by hospitalizations, medications, medical care, and work limitations. The average cost of a stroke hospitalization in 2005 was $9,500. The lifetime cost of an ischemic stroke in the US is over $140,00 for initial care and continued rehabilitation due to lasting deficits.
